Designing Delta: Insights from Emma Heindryckx’s AMA
Hello everyone! I’m Emma Heindryckx, a UI/UX Designer at Delta. I recently had the pleasure of joining our community for an AMA session, where I shared a bit about my role, my journey at Delta, and the exciting projects we’re working on. Here’s a recap of our conversation!
A Bit About Me
I’m a 24-year-old digital designer with a passion for UX/UI design, illustration, and animation. I joined Delta nearly four years ago, fresh out of university. When I’m not designing, you’ll probably find me staying active with running or handball – and, on the sunnier days, I love cruising around on vintage bikes that I restore myself.
Designing for Delta: My Journey
My first big project at Delta was designing Portfolio Insights, which was both exciting and intimidating as a young designer. More recently, I took the lead on the design and user experience of the Delta Desktop App. It was incredible to see these projects brought to life, and I’m especially proud of how our illustration style has evolved over time – bringing it to life with animation has been one of my favorite parts.
Looking Ahead: Exciting Changes in 2024
We’re currently reworking the Portfolio tab, which I’m thrilled about! It’s still in the early stages, but I can’t wait to explore new ways to make this feature even better. Plus, with the launch of My Delta Home, we’re bringing AI into the mix, which will make the app more personalized than ever. We’re creating the ultimate tracking experience, blending AI with a fresh, new design.
Working at Delta
The team and vibe at Delta are amazing, and our office in Ghent is the cherry on top. Delta has given me so many opportunities to grow, connect with talented people, and work on incredible projects. If you’re interested in joining us, head over to our careers page at delta.app/en/jobs to see our open positions. We’re looking for people with JavaScript skills, backend development experience, and a passion for fintech.
The Role of User Feedback
As a product designer, listening to our users is a big part of what I do. For Delta Home, I conducted user interviews and reviewed prototypes with our Beta Squad. They gave us valuable feedback, which helped us refine the feature before its full launch. I’m looking forward to diving even deeper into user research for our upcoming features! If you'd like to voice and share your opinion, head over to our Discord and we'll get you on an interview asap! There's a link at the bottom of this article.
The Future of Fintech Design
I think fintech design will continue to focus on hyper-personalization, thanks to AI and machine learning. I see a future where our app adapts dynamically to users’ needs, providing personalized notifications, deeper insights, and educational content. We’re already moving in this direction with our Delta Academy and our upcoming personalized podcast, the Daily Recap.
Designing Across Platforms
When we worked on the Delta Desktop App, shifting from a mobile to a large-screen mindset was a challenge. The design had to evolve to take advantage of the larger canvas, making some user flows more seamless and uncluttered. It was a totally different way of thinking, but I enjoyed the change of pace and perspective!
Accessibility in Design
For Portfolio Insights, we put a lot of effort into ensuring the app was accessible for color-blind users. Since we use various colors to represent different data, we needed to find a palette that was both visually distinct and accessible. We tested different colors using software and filters to understand how color-blind users would see them.
